WHO DO YOU CHOOSE? Was born a restless soul I’ve got a wondering mind Been down so many roads Yeah I’ve had too much time Who do you choose? Was born a restless heart I’ve got a wondering mind I’ve see so many things I can’t deny Who do you choose? Who do you choose? I’ve had so many dreams So restless nights I’ve read too many things I’ve heard a hundred lies Who do you choose? Who do you choose?

LYDIARD STREET What am I doing here? It wasn’t in the script It wasn’t in the book Not that I was reading it What am I doing here? Walking down Lydiard street Bumping into roadsigns Tripping on my feet… Down Ballarat, Ballarat I want to see a movie I’m looking to escape But they don’t make movies For gown ups these days So I cross over to the gallery Feel my head’s caught in a spin I think I need a shot of caffeine Just so I can take it in… Down Ballarat Ballarat I met a man called Julian Owns a 2nd hand book store After many years of travelling Says he’s found what he’s looking for He points me to the east side And I can hear the violins Playing on the bandstand It’s the first day of Spring… Down Ballarat Ballarat

NOTHING CAN GET TO ME NOW I’m up in the air Where I cease to exist I’m floating away Caught In a heavenly bliss Stay here Above the sea of clouds Stay here Nothing can get to me now I’m floating away Like a party balloon Free of life’s grip On a pale afternoon Stay here Above the sea of clouds Stay here Nothing can get to me now I’m in my great escape I’m a world away Stay here Above the sea of clouds Stay here Nothing can get to me now Stay here Above the sea of doubt Stay here Nothing can get to me now

STREETS OF GOLD I was free as a bird I was a kid without concern I was wild as fire No fear, no wires Somewhere along the way I was sold A better life, a higher home To the streets of gold Streets of gold I was unchained at the heel I put my trust in what I feel I collide with the dirt I was a kid without concern Somewhere along the way I was sold A better life, a higher home To the streets of gold Streets of gold Now I don’t know what’s real anymore I don’t want to wait around this town Somewhere along the way I lost my soul To a better life, a higher home The streets of gold Streets of gold

SHE WOKE UP SMILING She woke up smiling When she got out of bed She woke up smiling Before a word was said How do you just rise above? Girl I want some of what you got She woke up laughing When she got out of bed She woke up laughing Before a joke was said How do you rise above? Girl I want some of what you got Weren’t you walking with me yesterday Did you stop and feel the rain? Oh the sad look that came over me How I’m programmed to complain How your heart refrains

Trigger 03:07
TRIGGER Tell me what is the trigger I don’t know where to look Did you hear the black dog barking Before the ground beneath me shook Been living on the edge Nothing here makes sense anymore Tell me where to point the finger There’s no one around here left to blame I didn’t hear the black dog howling Before the sky began to rain Been living on the edge Nothing here makes sense anymore I’m living on the edge I can’t tell you why I can’t tell you why What went wrong, I don’t know Been living on the edge Nothing here makes sense anymore I’m living on the edge I’ll never let go I will never let go

UNDER YOUR WING You came in like a comet I didn’t see you coming There was such a strong wind that night You a like a rare bird Flew in from the outskirts I’d never seen those colours in my life Oh you changed everything Oh you, I’m under your wing You came in like a comet I had no way of running There was a strong wind that night Oh you you changed everything Yeah you, I’m under your wing

about

’Streets of Gold’ is the ambitious new album by Australian singer-songwriter Stephen Grady. Self-produced and recorded in 3 locations across Melbourne including a library; Grady reached out to California’s Alex Bush (Damian Jurado) to mix the album. Laden with guitars, harmonies, and driving drums, the 8-track album may come as a surprise to listener’s of Grady’s last album with folk-duo The Ahern Brothers. Behind the bold production lies an introspective, often rhetoric, deep tale of one person’s grip on reality, perhaps most evident on ’Streets of Gold’ and ‘Trigger’.

“I wanted to have fun with the production, push myself, throw all sorts of colours and instrumentation at it. I used $20 keyboards, broken guitars, robotic count-ins, guitar solos, layers of harmonies. At the core of it though I still wanted something to say, in my mind there’s no point to big shiny guitars if you don’t have some truth to tell.”

Perhaps the album’s bold production stems from a pivotal moment in Grady’s childhood when he caught glimpse of the Crowded House 1996 farewell concert.

“I remember sitting just being glued to the tv-screen. It was pop music, but it held a message and you could see the emotion  on everybody’s faces in the crowd. That’s when I decided I wanted to write songs.”

‘Streets of Gold’ will form as one of two albums written and recorded by Grady to be released in 2020. Grady hopes to tour the album(s) solo and with his band ‘The Graduates’ later in the year depending on the state of the pandemic.
